SAN ANTONIO -- With a back injury sidelining last year's winner Fred Couples, this week's AT&T Championship on the Champions Tour is looking good for the 2011 runner-up Mark Calcavecchia.

"Last year I played about as good as I could," Calcavecchia said Thursday, "and lost by seven."

If it wasn't for Couples, Calcavecchia would have won by two strokes over John Cook and Tom Lehman.

Calcavecchia, Cook, Lehman, Bernhard Langer and Fred Funk are among the favorites in the 54-hole event that starts Friday on TPC San Antonio's Pete Dye-designed Canyons Course.

Couples shot a 62 in the second round last year finished at a tournament-record 25-under 193.

"I don't see anybody shooting 25 under," Calcavecchia said. "I hope not, because it ain't going to be me."

Calcavecchia, despite winning once this year and having nine other top-10 finishes, isn't in form to shoot 25 under. He won the Montreal Championship in late June for his second Champions Tour victory, and had a string of four top-10 finishes snapped when he couldn't crack the top 30 at the SAS Championship and the Greater Hickory Classic in his last two starts.

Calcavecchia had surgery on his right hand seven weeks ago to repair "trigger finger" under his ring finger. It's a condition that limited motion in his finger so much that when he bent it, he had to grab the finger with his other hand to straighten it out.

"Not to mention it hurt," Calcavecchia said. "And it still hurts. I can't hit 10 or 15 balls on the range. But I take a couple of pain-killers before I play, and once I get out on the course I forget about it."

Calcavecchia played six rounds between those two tournaments and broke 70 once. That was the last one he played, so maybe he's about to rebound.

It would come at a good time.

The top 30 on the money list after the tournament will qualify for the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship next week at Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, Ariz. Mark McNulty is 30th, $32,506 ahead of No. 31 Tom Kite.

Langer leads the Charles Schwab Cup standings, 111 points ahead of Lehman. The winner will get a $1 million annuity.

＜マンシングウェアレディース東海クラシック　初日＞◇17日◇南愛知カントリークラブ 美浜コース(6,413ヤード・パー72)

　愛知県にある南愛知カントリークラブ美浜コースを舞台に開幕した、国内女子ツアー「マンシングウェアレディース東海クラシック」の初日。1イーグル・5バーディ・1ボギーでまわった横峯さくらが、米山みどりと並んで6アンダーをマーク。初日から首位に立ち大会連覇へ向け好スタートを切った。

　横峯は5番パー5で残り230ヤードのセカンドを3番ウッドで2メートルにつけると、これをしっかり沈めてイーグル奪取。7番からは3連続バーディを奪って前半を5アンダーで折り返した。後半は13番と15番でバーディ、最終18番はセカンドが奥のカラーにこぼれてボギーとするが「ショット自体も調子良くて。ドライバーはあまり良くなかったがアイアンが良かった」と初日から繰り広げられたバーディ合戦で頭ひとつ抜け出した。

　横峯と同じく首位に立った米山は、不調だったショットをパットでカバーした。5番、6番でバーディを奪うが8番でボギー。9番でも5メートルのパーパットが残り、嫌な流れになり始めたが何とかパーセーブして後半の5バーディにつなげた。「パットが入ってくれると、ラクにプレーできる。ショットは納得いかなかったので調整して自信を持てるようにしたい」と話した米山。地元Vに意欲を見せる。

　神奈川県にある戸塚カントリー倶楽部を舞台に開幕した、国内男子ツアー「キヤノンオープン」の初日。この大会の09年覇者、池田勇太は1イーグル・3バーディ・1ボギーの4アンダーでホールアウト。首位と4打差の7位タイと好発進した。

　「全体的なマネージメントが良くなってきたね」とこの日のラウンドにはそこそこ満足といった池田。両肩に痛みを抱える池田だが、「パッティングに関してはまだまだだけどショットが安定してきた」と調子は上向き。パットの「距離感、ライン出しが今ひとつ」だが、ショットとかみ合えばさらに上位を狙えそうだ。

Lee leads by 1 shot at Asia-Pacific Amateur

LONGKOU CITY, China (AP) -- Lee Chang-woo of South Korea is one round away from playing in the Masters.

Lee pieced together a 2-under 69 on Saturday at Nanshan International Golf Club to take a one-shot lead over Dou Zecheng of China and Shohei Hasegawa of Japan going into the final round of the Asia-Pacific Amateur.

The winner gets an invitation to the Masters in April, along with a spot in the final stage of qualifying for the British Open.

The top 10 players from six countries were separated by seven shots going into Sunday. Among them was 15-year-old Guan Tianlang of China, the defending champion who had a 68 and was just five shots behind in his quest to return to Augusta National. Earlier this year, Guan made the cut at the Masters.

Lee was at 2-under 211 as only two players remained under par. The conditions have been harsh this week, with cold and wind, though they relented slightly on Saturday and allowed for some better scoring.

Last week, Lee joined two-time major champion Rory McIlroy in a tie for second in the Korea Open. He would love to join McIlroy next April at Augusta.

''I'm trying not to feel too much pressure because all my shots are going pretty well at the moment,'' Lee said. ''Tomorrow I'm just going to try and repeat my performance over the first three rounds.''

Dou also has the Masters on his mind. The 16-year-old from China had two birdies on the last four holes for a 69 that put him in the final group Sunday.

''After I made the two birdies, there were a few nerves,'' Dou said. ''I was thinking about tomorrow and going to Augusta. I'll try and not to do that in the final round.''

The biggest move came from Guan, who opened with two 74s. In more pleasant conditions, he ran off five birdies on the front nine to at least give himself a chance on Sunday. He was five shots behind, along with U.S. Amateur runner-up Oliver Goss of Australia, who had a 71.
